Entering Mexico from the South? A little known rule
Entering Mexico from the South? A little known rule – Aircraft flying from Central, South America or the Caribbean cannot fly directly to all the international airports in Mexico.
First, they must stop at either Cozumel International Airport (IATA: CZM, ICAO: MMCZ) or Tapachula International Airport (IATA: TAP, ICAO: MMTP) for security and customs clearance.
This stop is mandatory for all non-Mexican operators, except for diplomatic flights with prior approval.
Passengers should be prepared for extensive revisions and possible delays, even if MMCZ or MMTP are used only for refuelling.
Local authorities will need to inspect the aircraft, crew, and passengers, which requires the aircraft to park and shut down its engines until the inspection process is complete.
