Niger airspace closed: The leaders of Niger’s military coup have closed the country’s airspace to avoid any military intervention from neighboring states.

The coup began on July 26 with the attempted overthrow of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum.

Flights already in the air when the airspace closure was declared were either rerouted or diverted.

The closure, combined with Sudan’s current airspace closure, means a significant widening of the flight path of most commercial flights between Europe and southern Africa.

UAS Africa Operations team is receiving full cooperation from other countries in providing alternative routings to avoid Niger.

Operators are advised to secure overflight permits in response to required detours as soon as possible.
