Tightening of Mexico’s Customs Rules for Passengers and Crew – Stricter customs enforcement practices have been introduced for Mexico including restrictions on laptops, tablets, vapes, and prescription medications affecting a wide range of travellers.
Here’s what operators, flight departments, and crew need to know to avoid penalties, delays, or seizure.
Electronic cigarettes and vapes have been illegal in Mexico since January of this year. Therefore, they are banned from import, sale, and use in Mexico with possession incurring fines of more than $1,000 or even criminal charges for multiple devices.
The one-device limit per person for laptops and tablets is now being strictly implemented and exceeding this may result in a 19% import tax with no exemptions for crew or electronic flight bags.
Also expect more scrutiny when it comes to prescription medication. Travellers carrying prescription medications should ensure all drugs are properly labelled and accompanied by valid prescriptions. Increased scrutiny is being applied, and any discrepancies may result in confiscation or legal action. Always avoid handling unknown items to avoid legal issues.
