Why It’s Important to Recharge

Why It’s Important to Recharge: It’s often those who set themselves the highest personal and professional standards that have the hardest time switching off. Because high performers rely heavily on their mental capacity and creativity on a day-to-day basis, one could argue they have an even greater requirement for downtime and rest then the majority of people.

Although we’re aware of the importance of taking time off to recharge, it can be tempting for us to ignore this need within ourselves, or to feel guilty for taking time off, or to think that we are the exception to the rule and don’t need as much rest as others. Well, we’re not.

“You can’t be great if you don’t feel great. Make exceptional health your number 1 priority”

Robin Sharma

We hear a lot about work/life balance: how we need to achieve it ourselves, how we must ensure our employees are achieving it. Let’s define the term work/life balance as the correct allocation of time to both our work and personal lives on a daily and weekly basis so that we can take the best care of our bodies, our general health, and our relationships, and also decrease stress and anxiety. It’s clear from this definition that striving for work/life balance is a no-brainer.

However, many ambitious, high-achieving people who habitually push themselves often see rest and recuperation as a waste of valuable work time. But nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, we need the benefits derived from downtime so we can return to work with clearer mental function and a new perspective that allows us to theorize and problem solve better than before.

Recharging is vital, so if this is something you struggle with, you need to give yourself permission to take a step back and give your mind a rest, and some new inspiration. Personally, I love to travel the world with my family, I like to hike up mountains and seeing amazing, panoramic views – this is what puts life in perspective for me.

Experiencing more of the amazing world we live in helps me to unwind, understand my purpose more clearly, and appreciate all I’ve achieved and my loved ones even more strongly. It also rejuvenates my passion and adds a new intensity and vigor to my work when I return. So, if this is something you struggle with, it’s time to consider the benefits of taking time to switch off properly.
