Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (IATA: CAN, ICAO: ZGGG) is one of China’s most strategically significant aviation hubs and the primary gateway to South China. Serving Guangzhou, a major economic, commercial, and industrial centre, ZGGG operates continuously as a full Airport of Entry, handling in excess of 55 million passengers per year. The airport has also served as the venue for major international events, most notably the 24th World Route Development Forum (World Routes 2018), which took place in Guangzhou from September 15-18, 2018, a testament to ZGGG’s standing as one of the top three air hubs in China and a key node in the global aviation network.

For operators planning aviation trip support services to this destination, whether routine, urgent, or in the context of a major international event, understanding every dimension of ZGGG’s operational framework is not simply advisable. It is the foundation of a compliant and successful mission. The airport’s combination of 24/7 operations, strict curfew restrictions, mandatory permit requirements, and significant passenger volumes means that only thorough preparation and early engagement with a trusted international trip support company will consistently deliver the results operators and their clients expect.

Permit Lead Times

Landing permits are required for all operations into China at guangzhou airport. The official lead times for permit approval are firmly structured and must be respected in all mission planning:

Private jets: 3 working days

Charter flights: 15 working days

These lead times are set by the Chinese aviation authority and are not flexible under standard operating conditions. Operators relying on last minute aviation trip support services or urgent aviation trip support services to ZGGG must engage their international trip support company at the earliest possible stage, as Chinese permit processes carry significantly longer lead times than many other jurisdictions worldwide. Failure to allow sufficient time for permit approval is among the most common and avoidable causes of disruption on China operations. For events such as World Routes 2018, where multiple operators converge on the same airport within a short window, early permit submission becomes even more critical to securing preferred slots and parking.

Guangzhou Airport Restrictions and Curfew

Operators planning missions to Guangzhou Airport must be aware of the following operational restrictions applicable to private and charter jets at ZGGG:

No take-off or landing is permitted during the period 2300Z to 0100Z

From 0100Z to 1400Z, only one take-off or landing is permitted for private or charter jets

These curfew windows are strictly enforced and must be reflected accurately in all flight plan filings and arrival and departure scheduling. Operators providing aviation trip support services at ZGGG airport should confirm that all itinerary legs are planned entirely within the permitted operating hours. Non-compliance with Chinese aviation operating windows carries meaningful consequences, and any deviation from approved schedules can have implications for ongoing permit validity and future operations into China.

Parking and Apron Information

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has 173 aircraft parking bays. PCN values for the key apron zones are as follows:

East Apron:

PCN 109/R/B/W/T: Stands Nr.106, 117

PCN 98/R/B/W/T: Stands Nr.101–105, 107–116, 118–130, 140, 306–308, GY11–G12

PCN 79/R/B/W/T: Stands Nr.131 onwards

Maintenance Apron: PCN 51/R/B/W/T: Stands Nr.411–419, 424–429, 413A, 416A, 419A

Operators coordinating parking arrangements through their international trip support company should confirm stand assignment well in advance of arrival, particularly for larger aircraft types and during periods of elevated traffic such as major international events.

Maintenance Facilities

ZGGG provides extensive maintenance support for a wide range of aircraft categories. The maintenance area can accommodate one wide-body aircraft (A380), two wide-body aircraft (B747) and two narrow-body aircraft (B757, B737, A320); or alternatively one wide-body aircraft (A380) and nine narrow-body aircraft (B757, B737, A320). The painting area can accommodate one wide-body aircraft (A380) and two narrow-body aircraft (one B757 and one B737), arranged nose to tail.

Hangar Nr.11 can accommodate eight narrow-body aircraft (A320/A321-200/B737/B757). Hangar Nr.10 is divided between a maintenance area and a painting area. Equipment available includes a platform lift (30 tons), forklift (7 tons), baggage transporter, cargo tow tractor, freight processing system (1.5 tons), and a container bulk cargo processing system (13.6 tons). Spare parts and other maintenance work are available through prior arrangement, and circuits maintenance is also available.

Immigration Procedures

For international flights at ZGGG airport, crew and passengers will clear immigration through the main terminal at both arrival and departure. For domestic flights, immigration clearance takes place through the FBO for arrival and departure.

Citizens of Japan, Singapore, and Brunei holding a regular passport are able to obtain a visa-free stay in China for up to 15 days. All other citizens must hold a valid Chinese visa prior to entry. Passengers who arrive before a visa has been completed may face penalties including denial of boarding or entry, or fines. Those with valid waivers are exempt from these penalties.

Additional note: APEC card holders are permitted to enter China without a visa.

Customs Procedures

Luggage and goods carried by inbound and outbound passengers at Guangzhou International Airport must be for personal use only, in a reasonable quantity, and declared as actual personal items to Customs. All declared items are subject to inspection by Customs officials. The duty-paid value of inbound and outbound goods is determined by Customs officers in accordance with Chinese law.

Short-term passengers, defined as those approved to stay in or outside China for no more than one year, may carry the following goods into China subject to the applicable restrictions. Goods in Category I must be for personal use only and in a reasonable quantity. An inbound passenger may carry 400 cigarettes, 100 cigars, or 500 grams of tobacco, along with two bottles of alcoholic beverage (of higher than 12 percent alcohol content and totaling less than 1.5 liters) free of duty. Inbound passengers with Category III goods will be subject to customs duties.

The China Customs e-brochure provides comprehensive guidelines on all customs regulations and clearance procedures and is available at: http://english.customs.gov.cn/Legislation/Laws

Climate and Security

Guangzhou enjoys a humid subtropical climate zone. The city receives abundant sunshine and rainfall throughout the year. Summers are long and humid while winters are short and mild, conditions that operators and their passengers should factor into ground logistics and accommodation planning when scheduling missions to Guangzhou Airport.

There are generally no security concerns at this destination; however, it is always recommended to check with your aviation trip support services advisor before travel to confirm the current environment at the time of the planned operation.

Ground Transportation

Nine shuttle bus lines are available linking the airport and the Guangzhou downtown area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Taxis are available outside the main terminal 24/7. Operators coordinating last minute aviation trip support services at ZGGG should pre-arrange ground transport to avoid delays, particularly given the airport’s significant year-round passenger volumes and the additional congestion that accompanies large international events.

Accommodation

A selection of hotels is located in proximity to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Note: This list is for informational purposes only and based on proximity. UAS does not promote any specific establishments.

Alternative Airports

Should overnight parking not be available at ZGGG, the following alternatives should be considered: Shenzhen (ZGSZ), Xiamen (ZSAM), and Nanning (ZGNN).

Flight Ops to Guangzhou – World Routes 2018

The 24th World Route Development Forum took place in Guangzhou, China, from September 15-18, 2018, with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (ZGGG/CAN) serving as the operational hub for all arriving and departing mission traffic. World Routes 2018 represented one of the most significant international aviation gatherings ever hosted at ZGGG, underscoring the airport’s capacity to support high-volume, high-profile operations.

For operators flying to Guangzhou Airport for World Routes 2018 and similar large-scale international events, the key operational parameters remained consistent with standard ZGGG requirements: PPR was not required, Jet A1 fuel was available, the airport operated 24/7, and permit lead times of 3 working days for private jets and 15 working days for charter flights applied. As with all China operations, early permit submission and close coordination with UAS Beijing were the essential prerequisites for a smooth arrival and departure at ZGGG during the event period.
