
The operational environment across the Middle East remains fluid as regional tensions continue to affect airspace risk assessments, traffic flows, airport availability, and route planning.
While flights continue to operate through several Middle Eastern Flight Information Regions, operators should not assume that published airspace availability means normal operating conditions. Restrictions may be introduced or extended at short notice, while tactical rerouting, holding, congestion, and GNSS interference may affect missions even when the planned departure, destination, and alternates remain available.
For business aviation operators planning flights to, from, or across the region, close monitoring, mission-specific risk assessment, and flexible contingency planning remain essential.
Regional Airspace Remains Available, but Conditions Are Volatile
According to the latest IATA Middle East Region Contingency Coordination SITREP, arrivals, departures, and overflights remain available across several regional FIRs, including:
- Bahrain
- Egypt
- Iran
- Iraq
- Jordan
- Kuwait
- Lebanon
- Oman
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- Syria
- UAE
- Yemen
However, this should not be interpreted as a uniform indication of unrestricted operations or an assessment that every route is suitable for every operator.
Individual states, aviation authorities, regulators, insurers, and operators may apply different restrictions based on their respective security and safety risk assessments.
IATA has also reported increased holding and tactical traffic management across multiple FIRs. Operators should therefore anticipate possible route changes, congestion, additional holding, and higher fuel requirements.
EASA Advisory for the Gulf Region
On July 14, 2026, EASA issued an active Conflict Zone Information Bulletin covering:
- Bahrain FIR
- Kuwait FIR
- Doha FIR
- Emirates FIR
- The portion of Muscat FIR over the Gulf of Oman west of longitude 58°E
The bulletin recommends that operators within its defined scope do not operate within the specified airspace at any altitude or flight level. It is currently valid until July 29, 2026, unless reviewed earlier.
EASA cited risks associated with potential missile and drone activity, military interception, falling debris, and the heightened readiness of regional air-defence systems. Its assessment also notes that military developments may occur with limited warning, reducing the time available for tactical rerouting or airspace management measures.
The recommendation applies specifically to EASA operators and EASA-authorised third-country operators conducting relevant operations under their TCO authorisation. Other operators should follow the requirements and guidance of their state of registry, state of operator, insurers, and internal safety and security processes.
Iranian Airspace and Regional Rerouting
Flight-tracking observations indicate that many operators are avoiding Iranian airspace while continuing to use other available routes across the Middle East, subject to their own operational approvals and risk assessments.
This concentration of traffic on alternative routes may place additional pressure on neighbouring FIRs. Operators should prepare for:
- Longer routings
- Increased airway congestion
- Tactical flow restrictions
- Additional holding
- Higher fuel requirements
- Changes to suitable en-route alternates
- Short-notice flight plan revisions
Separate EASA advisories covering the airspace of Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon are also active and are currently valid until August 31, 2026, unless reviewed earlier.
Saudi Arabia: Monitor Southern Airport Availability
Recent operational disruptions have affected several airports in southern Saudi Arabia, with temporary closures and restrictions introduced within the OEJD/Jeddah FIR.
As airport availability may change at short notice, operators planning missions to the region should verify the latest NOTAMs and obtain direct confirmation before dispatch.
Contingency planning should include suitable alternate airports, appropriate fuel reserves, and confirmation of handling, parking, crew transport, and passenger arrangements at both the intended destination and alternates.
Operators should also continue monitoring the wider OEJD/Jeddah FIR for possible route restrictions or other operational measures introduced in response to regional developments.
Jordan, the GCC, and Surrounding FIRs
Flights continue to operate through Jordan and several GCC airspaces. However, regional operations may still be affected by military activity occurring beyond the immediate planned route.
Even when an airport and its associated FIR remain available, operators must consider:
- The location of military facilities and active defence systems
- The possibility of missile or drone activity
- Sudden airspace closures or route suspensions
- Traffic displaced from restricted or avoided airspace
- Air traffic management measures
- Airport and alternate capacity
- Regulatory and insurer limitations
Airspace availability must therefore be assessed alongside the wider regional risk environment and the operator’s own risk tolerance and approval framework.
GNSS Interference Remains a Significant Concern
IATA has highlighted increased GNSS jamming and spoofing throughout the region.
Operators should review procedures for navigation degradation and false-position indications, particularly when operating close to affected areas. Flight crews should be briefed on expected interference, reporting procedures, alternative navigation capability, and any destination-specific considerations.
GNSS interference should also be evaluated during approach planning, particularly where the intended procedure depends heavily on satellite-based navigation.
Key Operational Planning Considerations
Operators planning Middle East missions should consider the following measures:
- Review the latest NOTAMs and state aeronautical publications throughout the planning cycle.
- Confirm airport availability directly, particularly where recent closures or restrictions have been reported.
- Check all applicable EASA, national authority, insurer, and company security requirements.
- Conduct a mission-specific safety and security risk assessment.
- Carry sufficient contingency fuel for rerouting, holding, or diversion.
- Select alternates that are unlikely to be affected by the same developing event.
- Review GNSS interference and navigation-degradation procedures with flight crews.
- Reconfirm permits, handling, fuel, parking, and crew arrangements close to departure.
- Maintain continuous flight watch and prepare for tactical changes while the aircraft is en route.
Planning for Rapid Change
The Middle East remains operationally accessible across several important routes and destinations, but the current environment requires careful assessment on a mission-by-mission basis.
Published airspace availability is only one part of the planning picture. Regulatory guidance, operator-specific restrictions, shifting traffic patterns, GNSS interference, airport status, and the potential for short-notice escalation must all be considered.
