Free Route Airspace comes to Africa in 2024  –  Several areas in Africa are to benefit from Free Route Airspace (FRA) from January 25, 2024.

Areas include the Nouakchott, Bamako, Ouagadougou, Abidjan, Lome, and Niamey UTAs; and the GOOO/Dakar and FMMM/Antananarivo FIRs.

Following a trial period that got underway in November, the move is designed to increase efficiency for operators in the region are they are allowed to fly direct rather than from point to point.

Following many years of discussion, the FRA is the result of collaboration between regional stakeholders including IATA, ICAO, and AFRAA among others.

The move will reduce flight times, optimize jet fuel consumption, and enhance industry efforts to achieve aviation sustainability.
